Smile Sharing Community Awards 2015

The Smile Sharing Community Awards are a chance to celebrate and reward people who work tirelessly in support of their community and help initiate positive changes for the betterment of that community.

Our first nominee for 2015 is Mary Bishop

Mary Bishop

Mary is dynamic, very personable, resourceful, generous and caring.

Speak to her for a few minutes and you will find her warm, open and willing to connect you to others in her network and share useful information that keeps us aware and empowered where our social and political systems are concerned; traits not often found in our black community. Her in-depth knowledge, wisdom and connectedness stem from the many roles she has played over the years including Intake Social Worker for Halton Region, Town Councillor for Milton, premier-appointee to the Social Benefits Tribunal of Ontario and volunteer in many community organizations.

Mary is a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist, tirelessly working to fund charitable endeavours including several women’s shelters and the Diabetes Association of Ontario through Pizzazz Baskits, her business since 1994. She’s adopted a school in Jamaica and personally cares for others here, for example, there was one senior she cared for personally from 1999 to the time of their senior’s passing in 2014.

She is inspirational in her personal fight against diabetes; having participated in a recent study by McMaster University, she now determinedly observes food portion sizes and walks everyday in her personal fight against the disease regardless the weather. She shares knowledge gained from the study at every opportunity, having seen firsthand with family members, the ravages of the disease.
